Wiping the CMOS on the Fujitsu Lifebook S-4546

I got my Fujitsu Lifebook back from my mom. I had set the CMOS supervisor password on the notebook, but I never recorded anywhere what that password was. Oops. Now I can't get in to the BIOS to change the owner string...

Antlinux Linux kernel journal, 25Dec2007

So I'm building a new round of Linux kernels, using kernel source version 2.6.23.12, for all of the machines that I run. First up is an AMD64 kernel, which barfs while compiling 'vdso', whatever that is. The fix that I found on the net for that was to edit
$KERNEL_SRC/arch/x86_64/vdso/vdso.lds.S
and make the following change:

So I'm at the local Panera today, and I wanted to go back to my site and pull a up a few web pages in order to help me compile Apache. Instead of being able to browse my site, I get a message saying that my site (this site) has been blocked due to 'mature content'.

Someone posted a link to a webpage that details how you can set up your own .mac server using Apache with WebDAV, instead of paying for Apple's "services".

For some reason,
busybox's
ifup/down commands want the full paths to things like
run-parts
and
ip
. I've added paths to actual binaries in
ifupdown.c
and recompiled, and things seem to be working.

Removing Record Noise in Audacity

I had a friend of mine copy some old vinyl records to
.wav
format for me so that I could store them digitally (for archival purposes) and convert them to MP3 format in order to put the music on my iPod. One of the records was pretty beat up, and had a lot of clicking and popping noise in the recording. I started playing with Audacity, an open-source audio editing tool, in order to remove as much of the extra noise as possible. It turned out pretty well; here's how I did it...

GPS on the LG VX8500

How to view your current position (latitude and longitude) via the triangulation from GPS position built into the CDMA phone system that this phone runs on. It's not the phone that has a GPS receiver, it's the system (cell towers) that have the GPS receivers, your phone only determines it's position by triangulation between one or more cell towers. This has been posted about 1,000 times on Howard Forums, so posting it here for the 1,001st time won't make much of a difference I guess.

Fax Spammers, or how someone set up us the bomb

So I'm looking at files in
/var/spool
, and I notice that there's a few faxes in
/var/spool/fax/incoming
. "Hmm", I thought, "who would send me faxes?" It turns out that since my modem is configured to receive faxes (I use it primarily for PPP access to my server if my DSL goes down), there are fax spammers out there who hunt for phone lines with fax machines connected to them. I know, I know, old news. Here comes the fun part...

I found this project on InventGeek about how to build an alpha radiation visualizer. The alpha radiation coming from a smoke detector emitter element hits the CCD of a USB webcam in "random order", thereby creating entropy!

Benchmarking Round #2

In the interest of morbid curiosity, I decided to benchmark the VIA EPIA SP13000 again, this time using multiple filesystems, as well as using LVM2 and with and without the Padlock hardware encryption. This round of benchmarks were performed in September 2006.

Portaboom

Portaboom is a standalone mini distribution of Linux. PortaBoom's current goal is to allow people to play the game of Doom on any Intel machine with a CD ROM drive, regardless of what operating system is installed on the hard drive. Eventually, I'd also like to also be able to add other games and application software using a modular packaging system, which would let you choose what applications you want to run.
